by

Department of Agricultural and Food Science (DAFS)

Details of the event. No registration needed. See you there!
The Food Product Innovation course in UTAR’s Food Science program is now proudly offered in collaboration with F&N. In this course, students immerse themselves in every stage of product development, from extensive research and planning to formulation, production, testing, and marketing of their own innovative food products. First row (from left to right): Ms. Tan Pei Ling (F&N Product Development Manager), Ms. Megan Wong Sheau Wei (F&N R&D Manager), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lim Tuck Meng (Dean of Faculty of Science), Dr. Ali Yassoralipour (Head of Department of Agricultural and Food Science), Dr. Ong Mei Kying (Course Coordinator), Dr. Tan Yen Nee and Dr. Ee Kah Yaw (two panel judges from the academia).
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lim Tuck Meng (Dean of Faculty of Science) kickstarted the competition by thanking F&N experts Ms. Megan Wong Sheau Wei (F&N R&D Manager) and Ms. Tan Pei Ling (F&N Product Development Manager) for supporting the event, as well as providing their valuable insights as industry judges during the competition. He also encouraged Food Science students to apply their knowledge and skills in creating meaningful, sustainable products that contribute to making the world a better place.

We are honored to have Mr. Aaron, a Food Science student as our emcee of the event. We thank him in facilitating a smooth and eventful event.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Ong Mei Kying, coordinator of the Food Product Innovation course providing an overview of the scope, event flow, as well as rules and regulations of the competition to the judges and students. In short, each team is separated into two small groups, one in charge of pitching their product, while the other one is in charge of selling their product in the market area.

This time around, F&N has defined the product categories to be either drinks, gummies or ice cream. The 10 participating groups are required to pitch their products and impress the judges from both academia and industry. Not only does each team need to present the idea, name and rationale behind their product, they are expected to include relevant market surveys, background research, formulation and sensory evaluations, costing, marketing strategies, SWOT analyses etc.

After the presentations, the activity shifted to the designated marketplace where each group is required to set up sales booth, market and sell their products. The end goal is to make profit from their products at the end of this 1-day event.

Mr. Having a fun time pitching, learning and selling at the same time. It is surely great to receive valuable feedback from industry experts Ms. Megan and Ms. Tan.

Shamsuriyadi from Perak Meliponiculture Entrepreneus and Breeders Association (3PMP) captivated the audience as they demonstrated the farming of stingless bees including Tetragonula testaceitarisGeniotrigona thoracica and Heterotrigona itama. They also shared insights into the principles of bee housing design in Meliponiculture, highlighting how the designs facilitate efficient honey harvesting.
A group showing the honey pots and propolis of a stingless bee. Propolis is made of resinous substances collected by bees from tree buds and sap flows, which can be used to build, to seal gaps and to reinforce the hive structure.
En. Haizad and En. Shamsuriyadi from Perak Meliponiculture Entrepreneus and Breeders Association (3PMP) demonstrating how honey is extracted from honey pots, being cautious to leave plenty to support the bee colony. Bees eat their own honey for energy and sustenance, particularly when nectar is scarce or when they are dealing with unfavorable temperatures.
Students eagerly sampled different types of honey from different species of local stingless bees (i.e., Tetragonula testaceitarisGeniotrigona thoracica and Heterotrigona itama), each offering a unique and subtle flavor profile to explore.
